Benefits of Dental Implants
Rochester, NY

A woman with dental implants smiling at Thomas P. Rafferty, DDS in Beverly, MASpeak to us at Thomas P. Rafferty, DDS if you’d like to know more about how we can help you restore missing teeth with dental implants. The benefits of dental implants can’t be underestimated in terms of how they look, function, and feel. Although the treatment isn’t typically a quick-fix solution, once the implants have been placed there is no reason why they shouldn’t last for a lifetime with the correct care.

What is a Dental Implant?

Typically made from titanium, which is a biocompatible material that is used in medical and dental applications, the dental implant is inserted into the jaw. Effectively, it takes the place of a tooth root, and once osseointegration takes place - when the implant and bone fuse together, it becomes a strong base on which to place a crown, which is the artificial tooth. Dental implants are permanently fixed to your jaw and essentially become your natural teeth.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants look like natural teeth. No one will know that you have a replacement tooth as the crown is custom-made to fit and is color-matched to your other teeth. From your point of view, they behave exactly like your own teeth providing function and strength that is unrivaled by other dental restoration procedures. We'll tell you if dental implants are safe for you at your first visit.

One of the biggest issues for denture wearers is that they do not always stay securely in place. This has limitations for wearers in terms of what they eat, but it may also affect speech. Denture wearers do not always feel confident about smiling or laughing, in case their dentures move or slip. With dental implants, none of these are issues. Implants are secure and are no more liable to move than your own teeth.

Most people are not aware that the effects of losing a tooth go beyond how a missing tooth looks from a cosmetic point of view. Tooth roots are important in maintaining the health of the jawbone. The pressure of biting and chewing stimulates the bone, and in the same way as muscles atrophy, if they are not used, bone loss occurs if a tooth is lost. A dental implant acts in exactly the same way as a tooth root and is subject to the same biting and chewing forces of a natural tooth. Dental implants help to maintain bone health and prevent further bone loss.

Dental implants also help to support facial structure. If a tooth is missing, there is nothing to support the facial tissue directly above it. Over time, the tissue gradually sinks into the space and forms lines and wrinkles in the face. Bone loss in the jaw creates a sunken, aging appearance, which over time affects the whole structure of the face.

Although dental implants appear to be an expensive option, they are actually very cost-effective. Other dental restorations typically need to be replaced regularly but dental implants will last indefinitely providing you maintain a regular oral health regime.
